The Ross Firm

I am stopping in to see my friend Quinn Ross in Goderich, Ontario. Tonight I will be joining him and his wife Erin.  Tomorrow I will drop off my artwork at lambton heritage museum for the Paint Ontario show opening on  March 8th.

I often wonder as I apply each brushstroke how my work will be received by my contemporary audience and the future generations.  Each time I mix a colour and apply the bristles to the canvas or panel I go through a thought process.  Some times they are good thoughts, sometimes they are about life in general, sometimes about finance, but mostly they are about the image in front of me.  I wonder how the strokes will be received.  Will I receive the recognition from my contemporaries?  Will I be told that it is very good?  Will some collector tell me they are interested in my work, yet never buy? Will my art be placed in a museum or mentioned in some periodical?  Will it all join me in my mausoleum?  Or will it be left for my family that I have not had yet?

Each time i put my brush to a pallet I consider the contrast, the light, the combination of a million hues expressed in the limited pigments at my disposal.  I think about the joy that is the art.  I think about my life in a studio made of canvas and I smile.  If only you could know the passion and love for my work you would never want to know the timeless doubt and angst that is the life of an artist.  But yet the art is revealed and you may enjoy without the artists desperate sorrows over finances and deadline.  I simply want you to enjoy the strokes I create.

Gallery Hittite Valentines Group Show 2013

On Saturday I attended the opening of the Valentines Group show at Gallery Hittite.  (107 Scollard St. in Yorkville, Toronto)  Despite the howling winds and pelts of snow in the cold February night the attendance was very good.   I had many friends arrive to visit the show.  Although Kelly was not able to join me that evening, her sister Kristina was there with a couple friends to close the night.  I am sorry that the winter weather prevented many from visiting the gallery that night however, the show runs until the 9th of March.

My Northern Lights painting was met with repeated praise as to  the effects of the light shining from the stars, borealis in the night sky and most importantly the ever shining beacon atop the lighthouse.
Early in the evening we were able to get a group photo of the attending artists.

I was overwhelmed with the interest in my alabaster sculpture of Daphne.  I was acclaimed to be a master of mallet and chisel.  I am still on the journey to mastery but I enjoyed the praise.
People were intrigued by the skill and patience that had been involved in the creation of "Daphne"

However, my piece rocked!
To stand alone among my peers was the joy of the evening.  I look forward to my next show in Grand Bend, Ontario.  "Paint Ontario" will be opening at the Lambton Heritage museum in Grand bend on March 8th.  The artists and collectors vernissage will be held from 6 to 9 pm on friday the 8th of March

Sometimes it is nice to have a bright light when you loose your direction, you are in a difficult place or if the setting sun has left you in the dark.  Other times it is great when your buddy turns the light on for you...  Oh it is a fun day in the studio.  Turpentine is getting to me.  ;)  I will soon be back to the setting suns and shorelines now that the light is shining.

Upcoming Group Exhibition

I have been away from the blogspot for over a week.  Travel has taken me away from the Studio. Upon my return I threw myself into the work and completed my illustrations for a short children's story, "Sophia takes the cake" by Tara Shannon.  I have continued my creations on canvas and will be revealing the updates on those pieces shortly.

I am preparing for a group exhibition at Gallery Hittite at 107 Scollard St. in Yorkville, Toronto.  The show opens Saturday, February 16th from 6 to 9 pm.   I will be attending the opening and I look forward to seeing you there!
