Continued controlled chaos

No signature yet, however the chaos in the rocky foreground is coming under control.  Some semblance of a shoreline is emerging from my paint brush with the aid of a paint smeared pallet.  Continued colour combinations will be mixed as the daylight is fading beneath blankets of snow...

Organized chaos

It is a very arduous and confusing process to observe the world or a picture and then convert it to tones and shades with many hues and angles of light. I must interpret a subject into pigmented brushstrokes to fool the eye into believing the image it is viewing is something more then just a collective of colours and strokes that was manifested through organized chaos.  This is the challenge to the artist. This is the struggle that can stifle creativity and progress but it is also what gives me drive.
And so I paint on....

Shoreline rises...

...To meet the horizon.
The thoughts of dinner fill my head however the bell has not sounded so I must paint on. :-|

Snowed in?

After braving three hours of perilous driving though snow squalls from Collingwood to Tobermory I have arrived at the gallery to find Mike hard at work. Playa is supervising production as usual.... Zzzzzzz
The painting is coming along beautifully and I look forward to three days of peace and quiet working in the gallery and watching Mike paint. What a beautiful way to spend a cold and snowy few days off!

Progression

The snow continues to fall and the brush remains wet as the shoreline grows along the Huron Hoizon.  It is almost time for an espresso.

Lesson 1: Florence 1994...

There is always time for another capuccino!

-20 again...

A cool morning start in a warm studio.  One more capuccino and I am on that canvas like a wet brush...

Huron horizon

Todays dawn has met the sunsets dusk and beyond...

But still tomorrow this canvas will stand with its back to my easel tickled by my scrutiny at the end of a paint brush.  This horizon deserves a shoreline!

Sunday 20 January 2013

I began this morning with a sketch on a 2 x 4' canvas that I had drawn out two days before...

I began to apply layers of blue from semi precious stone pigments, Lapis Lazuli,  to cobalt blue from earthly minerals...

Cerulean blue and Manganese were also applied in a hatched brush pattern...

...glazes were layered again and again as the day progressed.

The projected image on the wall displays the landscape of the eventual goal to be expressed in artistic strokes...

...the colours are fanned out and blended carefully over and over again with each layer and glaze...

Finally the familiar colours of the setting sun are introduced and blended...

the beauty in the sky reveals itself....
...and reflects on the horizon below.
The day ends with the background colours applied to set the stage for every dynamic colour that will present itself in the foreground to display the beauty of the setting subject before darkness takes over.  But this day is set. There will be more progress tomorrow should this layer of paint be dry enough. Otherwise it will be a different piece of art for tomorrow.

I look forward to having you join me in the studio.

Friday 18 January 2013

Today has seen the beginning of three new pieces.  Two will join the series for WetRock Studios' 2013 exhibitions and the third is a commission for a Great Lakes Technical Diver (GLTD) and cave diver, as seen in process.  The other two are simply sketches but I thought I would share.  Enjoy the process as I do...

Tuesday 15 January 2013

So it has been a long day that has journeyed to the eternal night.  I have had canvases streched and started, always hanging over me like unfinished dreams that I have never returned to.  But below the shelter of the studio with wetrocks and melting snow I return to the stage as an artist and face the foregrounds of forgotten images to replenish them with brushstrokes of finality.  The skies have been lined with stars and I can soon whisper to them sweetly as I present them with my signature.  "good night, may you have a long life and forever please the eye that lies upon you"  My only wish for all my work.

Cove Island Light @ Night

And one by one the stars appeared as if the veil of darkness had been lifted.  Slowly the night of darkness would come to an end but yet the light of sanctuary would shine on for every wayward bark for an eternity awaiting an artist signature.
Todays agenda is for finishing touches and to reintroduce the the constellations to the skies of Tobermory, one star at a time.

Rain... isn't it January?

Mike and I are working away in the gallery yet again. I thought it was January and we should be surrounded by snow however it seems that we're having a couple of springlike days. Mike's putting the finishing touches on a couple of pieces and I'm working away on promo material. I was hoping to finish the website today but due to technical difficulties I must turn my focus elsewhere.

Tonight our friend Quinn (the inspiration to all that is happening with the gallery) is arriving for a couple of days of diving with Mike. I must return to the 'real world' tomorrow to Collingwood for work. Looking foward to Quinn's arrival, a great dinner, and some shop talk!

Studio days...

Today was 5 above in Tobermory and we spent most of it working away in the studio. Mike was hard at worked armed with a paintbrush at the front lines, Playa stood on guard (ok, she was sleeping), and I sat in front of the computer working hard on the website and getting up to date on today's social media. Not a bad way to spend a day!
